LIT3034 : Contemporary British Theatre

Convener(s): Dr Steve Nicholson

Please note: This module may or may not run in any given semester. Please check with the tutor.

General Information

The teaching on this module is largely seminar based, and will focus on a series of significant plays and performance texts written and staged in Britain between 1980 and 2016. We shall explore and analyse these texts in relation to their social, historical, theatrical and cultural contexts. They will be considered primarily as performance texts rather than as literature for reading, so we shall also consider issues of staging and of their critical reception.

Teaching

In addition to weekly seminars, there may be some occasions where we decide to work practically on texts in class as a useful way of finding out more about them. Seminars may include formal and prepared presentations by the tutor, and also by students. Where appropriate, we shall take opportunities to watch live performances of plays which are relevant to the focus of the module.

Assessment

1) A written essay of 2000 words, worth 50% of the overall mark. 2) An oral presentation which demonstrates your ideas for staging one of the plays studied on the module. Optionally, this MAY include a performance of an extract from the play.
