LIT112 : Critical Contexts: Interpreting Literature

General Information

Critical Contexts introduces students to a range of ground-breaking ideas from literary and cultural theory. The module explores how our reading and understanding of literature is made more complex by situating texts in relation to different interpretive contexts. Topics covered include: the institution of literature, the role of the canon, and the relationship between literary and cultural studies; theories about the author, the reader, the critic and the text in relation to power, interpretation and meaning; the importance of genre; and the impact of history and social identity on literature.

Teaching

There will be two weekly lectures that alternately introduce each of the key critical topics on the course and relate them to literary texts. Seminars will be weekly and last for 50 minutes. Emphasis in classes will be on intensive discussion of the concepts raised, and on the application of those ideas to readings of specific literary texts.

Assessment

Assessment will be by a short essay (30%) responding to one of the literary theories covered on the module, a research essay (60%), and sustained participation and engagement (10%).
