General Information

This module provides the opportunity for close textual analysis and contextual reading of Hollywood cinema, via examples from the 1920s up to the present day. The module materials and exercises will ground skills of visual textual analysis in the close study of examples of Hollywood cinema. The core activities will be the examination of continuity editing as the baseline technique of classic-era filmmaking , and the evaluation of popular frameworks for film interpretation based on applicable critical and theoretical concepts (auteurism film genres, realism, stardom and spectatorship).
