LIT101 : Introduction to Advanced Literary Studies

Convenor(s): Dr Robert McKay

Please note: This module may or may not run in any given semester. Please check with the tutor.

General Information

A course to bridge the difficult transition from A Level to undergraduate study, concentrating on encouraging students to approach text in new ways, and helping them develop a range of critical and analytical skills.

Teaching

Teaching will be by two lectures and one seminar a week. Seminars (groups of around 10-15 students) will provide an opportunity for you to discuss issues raised in lectures, and will also allow you to develop your own close-reading skills. It is vital that you read all primary and secondary material allotted by your tutor before every class, and that you always bring your books with you. Write down all questions, observations, and ideas, and bring them to the seminar. In your meetings you will be required to participate actively in discussion, so the more jottings you make on your poetry packs and set texts, the better.

Assessment

Three short essays. In order to pass IALS you are required to hand in all three essays.
