Convenor(s): Louise Sorensen

Please note: This module may or may not run in any individual session. Please check with the course Convenor.

General Information

During the course of this module we will study the craft of dictionary-making from both a synchronic and diachronic point of view. The early weeks of the course will introduce the theory behind the compilation of dictionaries and cover topics such as lexicon, key elements of dictionaries, definitions and citations. The history of lexicography will be covered, and the use of electronic dictionaries and corpora will be incorporated to enable consultation of primary resources.

Teaching

There will be two lectures per week which will present the topics mentioned above and occasionally entail practical exercises.

Assessment

Assessment will be by (1) a 3,000-word essay on one of a number of set questions and (2) an oral presentation (with accompanying written documentation) of dictionary entries.
