ELL218 : Syntax 2

Convenor(s): Nigel Duffield

Please note: This module may or may not run in any given semester. Please check with the tutor.

General Information

This second semester module in syntax further develops the introduction to generative syntax presented in syntax 1 (ELL 221). We will examine the syntactic processes and constraints underlying phrase-structure and discontinuous dependencies in English, and other languages: a particular focus of the module will be on accounting for "parametric variation" cross-linguistically, and on determining the limits on syntactic variation.

Assessment

The module will be assessed by means of a midterm "take-home" examination (30%), a final examination (50%), and a series of short quizzes (20%). All of the components of the assessment will be problem-based, involving analysis of syntactic data (especially "tree-drawing").
