EGH209 : Learning Across Cultures

Convener(s): Dr Richard Steadman-Jones

General Information

This module offers you the opportunity to meet regularly with a group of international students who are spending the year in Sheffield, to explore your cultural similarities and differences, to develop collaborative media projects (making a short film, recording a radio programme, or putting together a photo essay), and to learn about a number of different approaches to the study of cultural and linguistic diversity. Over the course of the semester, you’ll have a genuine experience of intercultural communication (and collaboration), while at the same time coming to understand how experiences of this kind have been explored in English and other subject areas.

There will be a two-hour session each week in which you’ll work with the international students – discussing different topics, developing creative work, and generally spending time together. There will also be a weekly one-hour session looking at different academic approaches to the study of cultural and communicative difference.

Mole Postings: 10% Media Project – developed as group work: 45% Essay (1,500 words) – individual work: 45%
