EGH208 : Theatre in Social Contexts

General Information

This course will introduce students to the history, theory and practice of theatre in social contexts. Models of social theatre explored in the module will include: theatre in community education, theatre in community development, and community-based activist theatre forms. This is a practice-led course, and students will be expected to participate in the negotiation, development, organisation and delivery of one or more social theatre programmes in collaboration with external partners.


Teaching will be through staff directed practical workshops and seminars, student led practice workshops, individual research, and viewing of live and recorded performance and practice-related material.


There will be two assessments for this module: 1. The creation and delivery of a social theatre programme (50%) 2. A portfolio containing individual reflection on the practice, and on the reading and the research undertaken during the module. (50%)
